CLICK!-Tip

Bottom page borders don't print in Word

If you've added a page border to your Word document (Format menu, Borders and Shading, Page Border tab), and everything is printing except the bottom border, the following tip will sometimes clear up the problem.

  1. Click the Tools menu, Options, Print tab.

  2. Tick the box next to Allow A4/Letter paper resizing.

If this doesn't work, the problem could stem from limitations of your printer. Try a different printer to see if the problem clears.

I read your BLOG and I read your webzine. They are done with such great taste and are very interesting and helpful.

Make your Excel spreadsheet fit on the page

  1. Click the File menu, Page Setup, Page tab.

  2. Change page orientation to Landscape if you have more than 20 columns, or less depending on how wide the columns are.

  3. In the Scaling section of the dialog box, click Fit to.

  4. Use the arrows to choose the  pages wide and tall by number (if you're only concerned with the width, leave the tall box at 1).

  5. Click the Print Preview button to check your results.

  6. Click the Zoom button (100%) in the Print Preview window. If you can read the worksheet on your screen, you'll be able to read it on paper.

WORD CHOICE-Tip
Barbara McNichol www.barbaramcnichol.com

Adopt, adapt – “Adopt” means to take as one’s own (e.g., someone else’s child), to choose (e.g., a lifestyle), or to formally accept (e.g., a position or principle); “adapt” is to adjust to various conditions.

“When you adopt a young girl, make it easy for her to adapt to your living environment.”

TECH-Tip

Create a strong, memorable password in six steps
Source: Microsoft.com

Use these steps to develop a strong password:

1. Think of a sentence that you can remember. This will be the basis of your strong password or pass phrase. Use a memorable sentence, such as "My son Aiden is three years old."

2. Check if the computer or online system supports the pass phrase directly. If you can use a pass phrase (with spaces between characters) on your computer or online system, do so.

3. If the computer or online system does not support pass phrases, convert it to a password. Take the first letter of each word of the sentence that you've created to create a new, nonsensical word. Using the example above, you'd get: "msaityo".

4. Add complexity by mixing uppercase and lowercase letters and numbers. It is valuable to use some letter swapping or misspellings as well. For instance, in the pass phrase above, consider misspelling Aiden's name, or substituting the word "three" for the number 3.

There are many possible substitutions, and the longer the sentence, the more complex your password can be. Your pass phrase might become "My SoN Ayd3N is 3 yeeRs old." If the computer or online system will not support a pass phrase, use the same technique on the shorter password. This might yield a password like "MsAy3yo".

5. Finally, substitute some special characters. You can use symbols that look like letters, combine words (remove spaces) and other ways to make the password more complex. Using these tricks, we create a pass phrase of "MySoN 8N i$ 3 yeeR$ old" or a password (using the first letter of each word) "M$8ni3y0".

6. Test your new password with Password Checker. Password Checker is a non-recording feature that helps determine your password's strength as you type.

MY-Tip
Help for your organization, time management, and other challenges is right here. Let me know how I can help you too.

January is National Get Organized Month. This article is a reprint from a previous issue of COPE.

My desk is an absolute mess! I spend most of my time looking for stuff, and feel so embarrassed when anyone asks me for something. I really want to get organized, but I just don't know where to start. Can you help me?

I can help you because you said something very important--you said "I really want to get organized..." So let's get started.

One day this month, clear your  calendar, dress comfortably, turn off the phone, and close the door. As of today, you have my permission to throw out all the junk. To make this process bearable, you'll need the right supplies, including:

Garbage bags; envelopes and mailers; shipping labels; stamps; an inexpensive (manual is fine) postal scale; fax cover sheets; calendar/PDA; company and other business directories; highlighter;
clear plastic folders labeled as follows: To Do, To File, To Fax, To Copy, To Read, To Type/Write, To Pay.
Tickler (follow-up) file; and a spiral notebook (your To Do book).

Starting the Process
Move the piles to one side of your desk, and put your supplies on the other side. Pick up each piece of paper and make a quick decision about it. Make the garbage bag your closest ally during this process. Here are some things you might come across.

A notice of a meeting you'd like to attend. You have your calendar right there, so schedule it. Then put the paper in your tickler file for the day of the meeting.

A project you need to work on that's due next month. Schedule time on your calendar to work on it, highlight the due date, and put it in your tickler file for the day you've scheduled to work on it.

A document you need to file. Instead, ask yourself: will I need this information again? Can I get this information somewhere else if I happen to need it? If I throw it away and then need it, what's the worst possible thing that could happen?

Several reports and books borrowed from people. Put them all in envelopes, address them, weigh them and affix the postage if necessary, and put them in your Out box.

Work you should do this week. Batch similar work together and keep it separated in your plastic folders. If everything you need to copy is in your To Copy or To Fax folder, you can make one trip to the copier/fax later. If you come across something you can do quickly, say a couple of minutes, go ahead and do it.

After you finish sorting, purging, and merging, you'll need to set up systems for everything. Use basic principles of organizing by giving everything a home, putting like things together, and using the right product to store it.

Keep going with this process as long as you can stand it. Take breaks if you need to, and be proud of your efforts.

Getting rid of clutter is exhausting, but you can do it. To keep the clutter from coming back, you'll need to set up a filing system that is easy to maintain.
